In many developing countries, the ketogenic diet is expensive because dairy fats and meat are more expensive than grain, fruit and vegetables. There is nothing inherently difficult about following a ketogenic diet. We have many patients who do this very easily over many years. Food can move too fast through the stomach and intestines after weight loss surgery (especially gastric bypass). Doctors call this "dumping syndrome." It can cause nausea, weakness, sweating, cramping, and diarrhea. Eating high-sugar or high-fat foods can make dumping worse.
