Increased reliance on mitochondrial respiration will increase the flow of electrons through the mtETC and, in turn, increase the potential for mtROS formation. Although oxidative stress is traditionally viewed as harmful, a modest increase in ROS is now established as a signaling stimulus that induces hormetic adaptation [3]. In regard to mitohormesis and mtROS, such adaptation is largely centered around antioxidant defense [4–6], making mitohormesis an attractive target for the prevention and treatment of chronic disease.

I just tried this recipe in my kitchen. OMG thank you so so much for this wonderful idea! The only thing I think I will try next time is to add just a dash or so of salt to the mug before microwaving (although it already tastes great!). The advice above is therefore not only illogical, but also works poorly. It completely lacks scientific support according to a Swedish expert investigation. On the contrary, in recent years similar carbohydrate-rich dietary advice has been shown to increase the risk of getting diabetes and appears to potentially worsen blood sugar levels long-term in people who already have type 2 diabetes. I still have trouble finding it palatable with savory sandwitches, though. Increases in cholesterol levels need discussion too. We do see temporary increases in cholesterol levels often as individuals transition onto a ketogenic diet. However, when you examine lipid particle size (a more important way to look at the cardiovascular risks), the risk pattern doesn’t seem to increase with a ketogenic diet. It looks and smells beautiful when baking. The bottom of my loaves is heavy and dense. The top rises and makes an air pocket. As a result, it’s just not really pleasant to eat with it being so dense and solid even though it tastes good. The few good pieces at the very ends were yummy. I really don’t know what to do. Almond flour is expensive to be going through it like this. 🙁

Development of metabolic syndrome depends on distribution as well as amount of fat. In Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the function of the brain is compromised by the buildup of debris (plaques and tangles) inside the neurons. This mainly occurs in the areas of the brain associated with memory, intelligence, judgement, behaviour and language and impairs the ability to complete normal day to day tasks and to interact socially. Whilst the symptoms of AD usually only begin to appear with age, evidence suggests that damage to the brain begins to accumulate years earlier. This includes the buildup of plaques and tangles and a decreased ability to metabolise glucose (brain insulin insensitivity)50. If an individual has Type 2 Diabetes (systemic insulin insensitivity), the risk of AD is tenfold higher51.
Choose whole grains such as brown rice and whole-wheat bread instead of white rice and white bread. Whole-grain foods are rich in nutrients compared with more processed foods. Whole grains are higher in fiber, so the body absorbs them more slowly. They do not cause a rapid spike in insulin, which can trigger hunger and cravings. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines from the USDA recommend that at least half of your grains be whole-grains.
It is known that different dietary components exert some effects on gut microbiome composition, mainly in relation to obesity and inflammatory states. The myocardial-mass reduction was completely reversed in germ-free mice feeded with a ketogenic diet. Regarding food control we can hypothesize that the particular metabolic state of ketosis could provide some benefit to weight and food control via synergic actions between butyrate production by gut bacteria and circulating high blood ketones (Sanz et al., 2015).
I just made this bread and although mine looks more dense than yours, it is good. I was going to make it again using a little less water to see if I can get more rise, but then I read your comment about you not eating this bread because your keto bread is more weight loss friendly. When the kidneys filter blood, metabolic substrates such as glucose and ketones are re-absorbed to prevent energy wastage. If blood levels of a metabolite exceed the capacity of the kidney to reabsorb them, then a ‘spillover’ effect occurs and the metabolite (i.e. glucose or ketones) appear in the urine. However, urine is not a very reliable measure. Firstly, whilst following a ketogenic diet, adaptation occurs over time that means more ketones are reabsorbed in comparison to the early phase of the diet9. Furthermore, at higher levels of ketones, the appearance in the urine does not correlate to levels in the blood10. Similarly, after consumption of exogenous ketones, urine ketone levels were not in proportion to the levels in the blood11 this may be because of the rapid onset of ketosis in comparison to when ketosis is achieved with fasting or diet. Therefore urine test strips are useful as a guide but have several disadvantages to their use to accurately quantify levels of ketosis. 
Maria, thank you for this recipe! Made this yesterday, and was shocked that it really did come together so quickly! I weighed the ingredients out as you recommended, and that worked out really well which I prefer since so many measuring implements can vary from one to the next. I made the almond flour and egg white version, but may eventually try it with the coconut flour. Even my non-paleo, grain-eating husband liked this bread and agreed to put it in his sandwich bread rotation–so that excites me too! My bread did have a slight purplish hue to it (used the Vitacost brand psyllium husk powder), so I just ordered some of the Jay Robb brand psyllium powder so that my husband won’t have an excuse to not eat this when he goes to make a sandwich with it. The difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis is the level of ketones in the blood. Ketosis is a physiological adaptation to a low carbohydrate environment like fasting or a ketogenic diet. There are situations (such as treatment-resistant epilepsy) where ketosis can be beneficial to health. Ketoacidosis is an acute life-threatening state requiring prompt medical intervention; its most common form is diabetic ketoacidosis where both glucose and ketone levels are significantly elevated.

Insulin (in-suh-lin): A hormone made by the cells in your pancreas. Insulin helps your body store the glucose (sugar) from your meals. If you have diabetes and your pancreas is unable to make enough of this hormone, you may be prescribed medicines to help your liver make more or make your muscles more sensitive to the available insulin. If these medicines are not enough, you may be prescribed insulin shots.
When preparing keto bread recipes, look out for low-carb ingredients that could contribute to brain fog and inflammation. Skip recipes that require conventional dairy or yeast, and avoid eating common keto bread ingredients like psyllium husk, xanthan gum, and nuts or nut butters too often — these can contain mold or irritate your gut.
