Ketogenesis is the pathway that forms ketone bodies from fatty acids. Starvation (specifically low levels of blood insulin and glucose) triggers ketogenesis in the liver cells’ mitochondria. Two molecules of acetyl-CoA from the breakdown of fatty acids are condensed via acetyl-CoA transferase to form acetoacetyl-CoA; a third is added to form 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) in a reaction catalysed by HMG-CoA synthase. HMG-CoA lyase then splits this to re-generate acetyl-CoA and form one molecule of AcAc. Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is formed from reduction of AcAc by BHB-dehydrogenase enzyme, and acetone results from spontaneous, non-enzymatic decarboxylation of AcAc. Acetone is a volatile molecule which is primarily excreted in the breath, although some evidence suggests that a small amount can be metabolised and oxidised4.
Metabolic syndrome, also known as Insulin Resistance Syndrome (IRS) and Syndrome X, is a cluster of metabolic and anthropometric traits including glucose intolerance, upper body fat distribution (increased intra-abdominal fat mass), hypertension, dysfibrinolysis, and a dyslipidemia (characterized by high triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, and small dense low-density lipoprotein [LDL] particles).1 Metabolic syndrome constitutes a powerful risk factor complex to identify individuals at increased risk for future Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Insulin resistance and abdominal obesity are two central components of the syndrome and are integrally involved in its pathogenesis. I used the coconut flour, Now whole psyllium husks (ground by me), and whole eggs…this bread is exactly what I have been looking for, for such a long time. Yes a bit dense with the whole eggs but super-tasty nonetheless. I know if doing egg whites would make a bit lighter. Add mozzarella and cream cheese to a large microwave-safe bowl. Cover the cream cheese with mozzarella (this will prevent the cream cheese from overheating and making a mess in your microwave). Melt in the microwave at 30 second intervals. After each 30 seconds, stir cheese until cheese is completely melted and uniform and resembles a dough in appearance (see photo for reference). This should only take around 1 minute total cooking time. Do not try to microwave the full time at once because some of the cheese will overcook. You can also melt the cheeses over the stove in a double boiler.

I was a Corpsman (not a corpse-man as some recent somewhat fanatical president would say), and I can tell you many stories of Marines and Sailors who maintained restrictive diets (aka picky eaters). Most obvious was lack of sustaining energy (hypoglycemia) at mile 15 (with 80lbs of gear including a 6.5lb rifle and 200 rnds of ammo, etc.) and depletion of essential vitamins, electrolyte imbalance. They were always the first to collapse and have to hear me scold “see I told you so.” An IV of D5W usually does the trick (D is for dextrose, OMG!)
Toasting it did no good as it had that “plastic” smell that Mizzsingbabe mentioned. I tried cutting a very thin piece, loading it with butter, garlic powder, salt and grilling in cast iron fry pan, then broiling it but still cannot get past the plastic/smell taste. Hi Tammy, I still have to try the muffin tin method to ive you a better response. Why don’t you make the recipe using exact ingredients for one bread multiplied x 9-10 and divide between 12 muffin tin slots? I think this will work better. This way we are not changing the amount of eggs. If you use less eggs, the bread will be more dry, since it is gluten-free.

I have a question I hope you can set me straight. I was putting the almond flour in my dry measuring cup and it didn’t seem right. I checked around the internet and found someone who said always weigh almond flour. So, I did. 8oz. = 1 cup so 8oz almond flour. It looks like enough but so much more than one dry measure cup. I got as far as doing the food processor part and realized I needed more eggs. So, I’m kinda in holding until I go to the store so, I thought I’d ask.. have I made a terrible mistake and wasted a lot of supplies or am I cool?

Typically, to gain lean body mass one needs to have some degree of caloric surplus, or at the very least, not be in a significant deficit. This is especially true when looking to add muscle mass. It is certainly possible to gain muscle mass on a ketogenic diet. For most individuals this would require consuming adequate protein (while still remaining in ketosis), enough calories to support growth, sufficient electrolytes to support muscle function, as well as incorporating progressive resistance training. The type and volume of resistance exercise needed to add lean body mass will be very dependent on the individual and their age, training status, health status, etc. Therefore, the answer to this question can become quite nuanced, but in simple terms, yes, it is very possible to gain lean body mass on a ketogenic diet while still taking advantage of the health promoting effects this way of eating provides.

Maria I have ALL your books, except your 30 day cleanse, and I have attempted the 7 day weight loss and healing plan, and dairy free I might add, but was so hungry and dizzy on it! My husband pointed out the the “lunch” area, item, says Side. Well I’ve read it 3 times – the front of the book and such, it doesn’t say add food to the “SIDE”…it says use this plan. Also you maybe have said elsewhere, but the math is wrong on the second page for total calories….lastly the intermittent fasting – I thought I read previously in the Metabolism book that you shouldn’t fast more than 3 days at a time, but this book doesn’t mention that.
