Garlic: Potent, but effective. Garlic is known as one of the oldest medicines in the world…and with good reason. An animal study that administered high doses of raw garlic to rats for 4 weeks found that it had a profound effect of reducing blood glucose levels, as well as cholesterol and triglycerides compared to rats who did not receive raw garlic (2). They also tested rats with boiled garlic, and saw no changes in blood glucose, so the benefit comes from raw garlic.
Your muscles need blood glucose for fuel, which means that when you take that barre or CrossFit class, you’re helping move blood sugar from the bloodstream into the muscles where it’s then burned up. Over time, this can lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity (i.e. how well your cells are able to absorb glucose from the blood and use it for energy). Intense exercise can temporarily raise blood sugar, so if you have poor blood sugar control, it make sense to start moderate (think: walking, jogging, or yoga), and then work your way up.
Metabolic syndrome is a common condition that goes by many names (dysmetabolic syndrome, syndrome X, insulin resistance syndrome, obesity syndrome, and Reaven syndrome). In rats fed a ketogenic diet (% energy: 78.1 fat, 0 carbohydrate, and 21.9 protein) for 8 weeks, UCP3 expression increased in the soleus but not the extensor digitorum longus, which is consistent with the soleus containing mostly oxidative, type I muscle fibers . In humans, glycogen depleting exercise followed by two days of a low-carbohydrate diet (0.7 g/kg body mass) increased UCP3 expression in the vastus lateralis .

While the lipid abnormalities seen with metabolic syndrome (low HDL, high LDL, and high triglycerides) respond nicely to weight loss and exercise, drug therapy is often required. Treatment should be aimed primarily at reducing LDL levels according to specific recommendations. Once reduced LDL targets are reached, efforts at reducing triglyceride levels and raising HDL levels should be made. Successful drug treatment usually requires treatment with a statin, a fibrate drug, or a combination of a statin with either niacin or a fibrate.
I made this late last night and awoke this morning to a beautiful loaf of delicious bread. It even smelled like bread baking. I had to use a mix of blanched and unblanched almond flour due to running out of blanched. I used NOW psyllium powder which is finer in texture than Jay Robb but all I had on hand so I weighed it (like everything else) but didn’t run it through the blender. I also added a dropper full of stevia glycerite to add a subtle sweetness. I’ve made the bun version before and they were really good but the stevia addition seemed to round out the taste and enhance the flavor in a very satisfying way. It rose beautifully and fell slightly but evenly upon cooling overnight. This loaf is perfect! Tomato sandwich, here I come.
Thank you for the terrific recipe. I must admit that this really turned out to be “oopsie bread” for me. Due to the expensive nature of the recipe (organic eggs, almond flour, grass fed butter) I really attempted to follow the recipe perfectly instead of going with my usual improvisational style. I also do not have a food processor however that did not impede anything… a hand mixer and a deft hand did the trick. I did add the optional xanthum gum and erythritol but not the cream of tartar. The batter filled my silicone loaf pan to the top, I smoothed it out and popped it into the oven. Then, to my horror, I saw the little pot of melted butter still on the stovetop. There was nothing to be done except cross my fingers and hope for the best.

How, exactly, does our body take pyruvate (from glucose) or acetyl CoA (from fat) and generate so much ATP? The answer lies in the beauty of the Krebs Cycle, which feeds into a process called the electron transport chain (or ETC), I alluded to above. Since the adage ‘you can’t get something for nothing’ is as true in biochemistry as it appears to be in life, to get all that ATP (i.e., stored energy in the form of the phosphate bond), we need to give up something. What the ETC does give up, as its name suggests, is electrons. Through a series of redox reactions the ETC trades the stored energy held by electrons going from higher to lower energy states in exchange for the chemical energy stored in the bonds of the third phosphate group on an ATP molecule.
Abundant data suggest that patients meeting these diagnostic criteria have a greater risk of significant clinical consequences, the 2 most prominent of which are the development of diabetes mellitus  and of coronary heart disease. Pooled data from 37 studies involving more than 170,000 patients have shown that metabolic syndrome doubles the risk of coronary artery disease. There is one exception to exercising with diabetes. If your blood sugar is too high (such as over 240) and you are spilling ketones into your urine, then exercise is only going to increase your blood sugar. Practically speaking, because it takes several days to raise blood ketone levels by following the ketogenic diet it has been virtually impossible to study the effects of ketosis on brain injury in humans. It is also complicated by the difficulty in quantifying the extent of the damage without repeated imaging and there is a lack of reliable biomarkers for concussion. Furthermore, concussions can’t be ‘administered’ to humans experimentally, making it impossible to study in a controlled setting. Therefore much of the proof of concept research looking a ketosis for concussion has been done in animals. Nevertheless, the results are promising: rats who were given a ketogenic diet or ketone precursors before67 and after68 a controlled concussive injury have were found to have improved brain energy metabolism, and improved cognitive and motor function post injury. Also, giving exogenous ketones as an injection post-injury protected the brain against glutamate induced excitotoxicity69 and alleviated the decrease in brain ATP that occurs due to the depression of glucose metabolism70. Therefore, as scientists’ ability to quantify concussion in humans improves, ketosis could be an interesting intervention to attempt to reduce the harmful after-effects.

Unfortunately, my bread fell short for some reason..No matter how long I toast it, it’s spongy and moist in the center…I’ve done everything as directed but substituted the butter for coconut oil. I measured it exactly too. Could that be why the bread is awfully wet in the middle or is there another reason? I tasted quite a bit of the psyllium husk as well which was okay..I’m thinking of making it with flax seed next time.
Hi there, how many slices you get really depends on the kind of loaf pan you use. I find I get around 20 slices for a bread made in the regular loaf pan (though with this recipe they will be rectangular rather than square) and 12-14 slices using a small loaf pan as described in the post. That’s why I decided to state a portion size – 12 per bread. 1 portion = 0.6 net carbs

People lose weight on the ketogenic diet, they lose their craving for sugar, they feel more satiety, they may become less depressed, their insulin receptors sensitivity is improved, and these are all the good outcomes you fail to mention. There is a growing body of research which demonstrates the neuroprotective effects of the ketogenic diet to slow cancer progression, as well as diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, for which there are no effective medical treatments. I wanted to try the receipe with gluten free oat flour or using other more neutral flours or starches that don’t contain that much PUFA’s and are more heat stable (vs. almond), since I do OK with carbs on training days. I made this bread today and love it! The only problem I have is that the bread is very moist on the inside. The crust is perfect. I baked it at 350 for 70 mins and the bottom of the bread was a little moist as well as the inside. I measured all of my ingredients as your instructions say. Please help. This is the best bread I’ve made in the 2 years we have been eating wheat free.
I finally made this recipe. (I have made many of your others and use them often.) It did fall slighty but I was still able to slice it after it cooled. It was also purple, which is just fine with me.
