I can upload the data stored on my pump and read it in chart or graph form to look for particular patterns over a period of time so that I can make corrections in my regimen. When I go to see a physician, I have a lot of information with me beforehand. We are both better informed. BUT, sometimes the data can be overwhelming. There are trade-offs when using the latest devices. If I’m doing well, do I really need to be doing “better”? It’s essential for me to remember that what’s important is to live well with diabetes, not to control it. The only reason for “controlling” (not a term I like) the disease is to continue to live a happy life. Getting everything correct is not a moral issue. It’s not a race or a competition. There are so many variables that one can never get it perfect. It’s not a battle. It’s a way of living. My body doesn’t produce insulin and yet here I am, still having fun and I don’t necessarily need to have more and quicker data to do it.
Some doctors can use a point-of-care A1C test, where a finger stick can be done in the office, with results available in about 10 minutes. The A1C test results provide insight into how your treatment plan is working, and how it might be modified to better control the condition. Your doctor may want to run the test as often as every three months if your A1C is not within your target range.

For individuals who have progressed to pre-diabetes, both the Finnish Prevention Study3 and the Diabetes Prevention Program4 showed conclusively that intensive lifestyle interventions decreased the overall risk of diabetes by 58%. Lifestyle interventions included a weight reduction of 5% or more, reduction of total fat intake to < 30% of total calories, and increased physical activity (≥ 4 hours/week). Even more encouraging is the report from the Finnish Prevention Study follow-up period averaging 7 years, in which the intervention group saw a 43% reduction in risk of diabetes.5 The intervention group had sustained lifestyle changes that remained even after individual lifestyle counseling ended.
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends to begin A1c testing at age 45 for overweight or obese people; if the result is normal, the testing should be repeated at a minimum of 3-year intervals, with consideration of more frequent testing depending on initial results and risk status, or when classical signs or symptoms of increased blood glucose levels are observed.

Please don’t think that because something is “simple” for you it is for everyone. I eat roughly 1,500 very low carb calories a day, workout several times a week, have a full time job where I am also walking for the majority of my day plus I’m a busy parent with very little down time. I’m lucky if I can lose a half pound in a week. Keep in mind that there is never a one size fits all solution.

As of January, 2010, the American Diabetes Association began promoting the use of hemoglobin A1c as the preferred diagnostic test for diabetes mellitus. Among its advantages over fasting glucose values (or 2-hour glucose values during an oral glucose tolerance test) is that samples can be drawn at any time and need no special handling (whereas ongoing glycolysis can falsely lower glucose values). “Whole fruit is nothing but good for people who have prediabetes,” Wright says. Just don't consume produce in the form of juice or smoothies. “Though a smoothie does give one a concentrated source of nutrients, they are often packed with calories that don’t satisfy our hunger as there is little fiber in them,” Denison says. So rather than drinking your fruit, eat it, spacing it out over your day.
Your diet is something you need to pay extra attention to when you’re trying to lose weight after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. While you may be working out and keeping your calories and macros in check in order to control the effects that adult onset diabetes has on your body, you must tailor your food consumption patterns as per a diabetic diet. This doesn’t mean that you have to give up on your daily staples completely. According to Dr. Maaz Shaikh, Co-founder & Vice President of Product & Care at Wellthy, it’s less about what you eat and more about making smart food choices with your existing diet.

Do dieters stop losing weight after about 6 months of dieting because they no longer have the willpower necessary to continue following their diet? Probably not. In fact, if they stop following their diet, they will likely regain the weight that was lost. Research in recent years has helped us understand the adaptive mechanisms that occur with a reduced energy intake (e.g., hormonal regulation,11–13 adaptive thermogenesis leading to a decrease in energy expenditure,14 and decline in weight-maintenance caloric requirements,15 to name just a few). So when dieters claim they are not eating any more calories than they were when they were losing weight but are only maintaining their weight loss, this may well be true, and we should probably believe them rather than think they are just not telling the truth, as is often thought to be the case.
If you’re a patient with Type 2 diabetes, the exact number of calories you’re supposed to consume on a daily basis depends on various factors such as your age, gender, current weight, physical activity levels etc. If you’re unsure of how many calories you’re supposed to consume, it is advisable to check with your doctor. But typically, if you have Type 2 diabetes, your calorie intake should be anywhere between 1400 to 2000 per day. For women, it should be anywhere between 1200 to 1800 per day. Work around your calorie consumption limits and plan your meals accordingly.

The OGTT is a diagnostic tool diabetes and prediabetes, assessing a person’s response to consuming a fixed amount of sugar. After taking the sugar drink, blood sugar levels are measured two hours later. Below 140 mg/dl is considered “normal,” between 140 mg/dl and 200 mg/dl points to prediabetes or impaired glucose tolerance, and above 200 mg/dl indicates diabetes. It is not useful for tracking diabetes management.
Aside from managing your diabetes, a diabetes diet offers other benefits, too. Because a diabetes diet recommends generous amounts of fruits, vegetables and fiber, following it is likely to reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer. And consuming low-fat dairy products can reduce your risk of low bone mass in the future.

Fruits for people with diabetes Eating a variety of fruits is important, but some fruits are better than others for people with diabetes. Fresh and frozen fruits are better than canned, processed fruits. Also, people looking to control their blood sugar should favor fruits with a low glycemic index. According to him, whenever you go on a diet, your hunger pangs increase because you tend to begin eating lesser than usual. But most diets don’t prove to be effective because when you feel hungry, you are most likely to give in to your craving for junk food. Dr. Shaikh says, “A smart way to go about your diet is to fill yourself up with proteins first. Some good sources of protein that you could include in your daily diet are from chicken, paneer or dal. Drinking dal is actually a very good habit. These foods make you full faster.”

While there’s no such thing as a diabetic diet anymore, there’s only so much your system can handle at once when it comes to foods that turn into sugar quickly. Here’s my advice: deprive yourself of no food, but limit yourself to one carb portion per meal. Carbs tend to be white in color: things made of flour (including pasta), potato, rice, and sugar. Oh, and corn is pale yellow, so it’s a white food, too. If you make sure every meal has only one white food, you’ll lower the blood sugar impact of the entire meal. If you want a baked potato, that’s not the meal to have a dessert with. If you want some ice cream, keep the meal to a pork chop, some green beans, and some cottage cheese (along with cauliflower, the only white-colored food that isn’t on the white foods list).
