Sugar is lurking everywhere. Check the products next time you go shopping, read the labels of a range of items and you’ll find out just how many of them contain “hidden” sugar. Sugar comes in many forms. The label might not say “sugar”, but if the words end in ‘ose’, it means it is still a sugar. A “healthy” breakfast of cereal, yoghurt, and fruit with a glass of orange juice can contain up to 14 teaspoons of sugar – the recommended daily amount is 7 teaspoons.
too much protein is often a common problem since your body will break down muscle (protein) before it goes to fat. body is looking for path of least resistance for energy, carbs are easiest, then protein, and fats being hardest to breakdown. For myself i found staying between 20-35g of carbs a day was most effective. Careful with fruits and berries as they have tons of carbs (fructose) and though nuts are great for healthy fats, a lot of them still have a moderate amount of carbs too. hope this helps

I had to build that awareness in myself that was what was happening.”
Here is the situation: I am 46 yo female with Crohn’s and migraines. I went gluten free in Aug 2012 and Paleo (still do lactose free dairy) Jan 2013. My Crohn’s which was mild, has completely subsided and my migraines nearly disappeared. I went from 167 lbs (I am 5’5″) to 145. I feel great and have started running again because I have so much energy. I rarely “cheat” and if so it is always gluten free. I recently decided to try the Fat Fast (Ketogenic) diet to see if I could lose the extra 10 (135 has been my goal…) since I have essentially stalled at 145-148 lbs. I started the fat fast 4 days ago and already lost 4 pounds (although that might be due to running 6 miles yesterday!). Ironically, I also had a physical planned for yesterday and had fasting blood work done. Breakdown was: TC 341, LDL 248, HDL 74, TG 98 Chol/HDL 4.6. My doctor called immediately and wants me to go on statins. I think not. I told her I was doing Paleo and now the Fat Fast for a few days and she does not get it (I didn’t expect her to, as I have gone thru the SAD, messed up medical school myself and have a PhD in Biochemistry, (again ironically) in Cholesterol Metabolism!) I’m embarrassed to say that my entire thesis was based on the “Lipid Hypothesis” and can be completely discarded at this point. Thankfully, it is not what you study, but learning to think while studying it that matters. Regardless – Can you tell me – what are your thoughts on this? I believe that it is entirely possible that my numbers were out of wack because I was ketogenic and fat wasting. And all that fat was probably hanging out in my blood! It makes biochemical sense. Have you seen/heard any concrete evidence of this yourself? My plan is to stop the fast (although it was pretty easy…and I was not hungry, AT ALL) as I am content losing a few lbs and that is good. And I will ask to have my blood work repeated in a few weeks/month. Any comments very much appreciated.

In people with cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease, medications may be required to control the amount of protein absorbed in the diet. The liver affected by cirrhosis may not be able to metabolize the waste products, resulting in elevated blood ammonia levels and hepatic encephalopathy (lethargy, confusion, coma). Low sodium diet and water pills (diuretics) may be required to minimize water retention.

There is a transition period in ketosis while the body is adapting to using fats and ketones instead of glucose as its main fuel. There can be negative symptoms during this period (fatigue, weakness, light-headedness, headaches, mild irritability), but they usually can be eased fairly easily. Weight loss is hormonally difficult, which is unfair and very unhelpful in the modern world, but it doesn’t do any good to pretend these problems don’t exist! The liver is the largest solid organ in the body; and is also considered a gland because among its many functions, it makes and secretes bile. The liver is located in the upper right portion of the abdomen protected by the rib cage. It has two main lobes that are made up of tiny lobules. The liver cells have two different sources of blood supply. The hepatic artery supplies oxygen rich blood that is pumped from the heart, while the portal vein supplies nutrients from the intestine and the spleen.
Subjects entered a randomized, controlled dietary intervention study. After weight stabilization for 4 weeks, they were randomly assigned to either a hypocaloric diet for 14 weeks immediately followed by a 2-week weight stabilization period or to weight maintenance with consumption of an isocaloric diet for 16 weeks. All tests were performed, at baseline and after 16 weeks, when subjects were at a stable body weight. Body weight, height, waist circumference, and blood pressure were recorded. Body composition was estimated using a Holtain Body Composition Analyser (Holtain, Dyfed, U.K.) from which total fat mass and fat-free mass (FFM) were derived (6). Subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue and visceral adipose tissue volumes and masses were estimated after magnetic resonance imaging, as described previously (16). All subjects were studied after a 14-h fast. Venous blood was collected for biochemical measurements before stable isotope infusion. LDL apoB-100 and HDL apoA-I kinetics were measured using primed (1 mg/kg), constant (1 mg · kg−1 · h−1) intravenous infusion of [1-13C]leucine (99.5% enrichment; Tracer Technologies, Somerville, MA) for 10 h (6). Blood samples for lipoprotein kinetic estimates were collected before and after isotope injection at 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 h. Subjects were studied in a semirecumbent position and allowed water only.

You can eat fish twice a week. It’s a great source of protein and omega-3s, which are a type of fat your body needs. Omega-3s help lower levels of triglycerides, a type of fat in the blood. The prevalence of NASH has reached epidemic proportions with as many as 25 million U.S. adults having the disease, as reported in a Newsweek article entitled “NASH is the 21st century’s looming public health threat.” The article accurately reflects the critical aspects of this disease, specifically in its early stages with mild fibrosis, the disease can be improved with lifestyle changes including weight loss. However, when fibrosis is advanced, and particularly when cirrhosis is present, weight loss has much less effect and the only resort may be a liver transplant.


Measuring blood ketones is the most reliable method. There is a home blood test you can use, but the strips can be very expensive. An alternative is to measure ketones in the urine with a dipstick test, which is much more accessible and inexpensive. However, this method is much less reliable and as time goes on and the body adapts to ketosis, it becomes even less reliable.

I saw a female patient recently who had a list of symptoms which pointed me straight away to her liver. I was however perplexed as to why she had a liver problem. Her liver enzymes were abnormally high reflecting liver inflammation and her liver ultrasound showed a fatty liver. I told her the reason she could not lose weight was that her liver was inflamed and overworked – but why?
Plasma glucose, free fatty acids (FFA), triglycerides (TG) and urinary d-βHB were assayed using a commercial semi-automated bench-top analyzer (ABX Pentra, Montpellier, France), and insulin was measured using a commercially available ELISA assay (Mercodia, Uppsala, Sweden). Both the pure liquid KS and KE, and a subset of plasma (n = 5) and urine (n = 10) samples from a subset of participants in Study 1 underwent analysis using GC-MS and a chiral column, and the concentrations of l-βHB was calculated using the enzymatically determined concentration of d-βHB and the ratio of the d/l-βHB peaks obtained through GC-MS. Acetoacetate was assayed using an enzymatic method (Bergmeyer, 1965), and breath acetone was measured using GC-MS (Study 1) or with a handheld electrochemical device (Study 2; NTT DOCOMO, Japan) (Toyooka et al., 2013).

When starting a lower-carb diet, you often have to cut out several food groups. If you currently rely on foods like rice, bread, pasta, fruit and cereals for a large proportion of your daily calories, you can end up feeling extremely hungry, leading you to eat more of other types of food. If you eat too much fat on a sugar and starch-free diet, you may not lose any weight, as you're simply consuming too many calories, notes Dr. Michael Eades.
In patients with an improvement in fibrosis score after weight loss, fasting insulin levels at enrolment were significantly higher compared with those whose fibrosis score did not improve (16 (6) v 11 (4) mU/l, respectively; p = 0.02). In addition, there was greater improvement in ALT levels at three months in those patients whose fibrosis score improved compared with those with no improvement (p = 0.03).
The way to lower LDL is to make your body burn it off. The mistake of the low-fat diet is this – feeding your body sugar instead of fat does not make the body burn fat – it only makes it burn sugar. The mistake of the Low-Carb, High-Fat diet is this – giving your body lots of fat makes it burn fat, but it will burn what’s coming into the system (dietary fat). It won’t pull the fat out of the body.
But before I gave up the sweet stuff, I questioned what it would do to my body-would I crave it more than usual? Is there such a thing as a sugar detox? "There are many theories on sugar and addiction, but I don't think there's any concrete evidence proving that a person can be addicted to sugar," says Marie Spano, R.D. and sports nutritionist for the Atlanta Hawks. She thinks the habitual intake and oh-so-good taste are actually what make it difficult to kick a sugar habit (see: The Science Behind Your Sweet Tooth). No one said this was going to be easy!
Because of all of this activity, your liver may be in need of a little TLC. When it's overworked, toxic residues can build up, causing inflammation that is associated with obesity. A stressed out liver can also cause fat to build up, especially around the belly. Added together, this can mean that no matter how much you restrict calories, weight loss is near impossible-unless you detox your liver.
Fatty liver disease occurs when some of those fat molecules accumulate inside liver cells. The presence of those fattened cells can then lead to inflammation in the liver and damage to surrounding liver tissue. Once that happens, if excess alcohol is not involved, the condition is called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (steato- for fat and –hepatitis because the liver is inflamed). Fortunately, that unwieldy name boils down to a handier acronym, NASH. Estimates vary quite a bit, but it seems that 5% to 10% of people with fatty liver disease go on to develop NASH.
A seldom discussed yet extremely important aspect of weight loss is liver function. The liver is the chief operator of detoxification in the body. In our modern day society, many of our foods are laden with hidden toxins and void of nutrients. Many fad diets cause the liver to work overtime in an attempt to keep up with the high fat and nutritionally void foods and weight loss gimmicks. This eventually causes the person to gain more weight in the end as the demand on the liver is too high.  Throughout this process, the liver literally becomes more and more sluggish in function and eventually becomes "fatty". Once a liver has reached the fatty stage, the function is extremely impaired and weight loss becomes an impossibility. The liver's job of detoxifying blood and metabolizing fat is compromised and the metabolism greatly slows. 
Your basal metabolic rate is the amount of calories you burn in a 24-hour period just by being alive, says Talbott. “Once you calculate it, you get a ballpark number of how many calories your body needs on a daily basis,” he explains.
