Other medications that may cause liver inflammation, most of which will resolve when the medication is stopped. These include antibiotics such as nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Furadantin, Macrobid), amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (Augmentin, Augmentin XR), tetracycline (Sumycin), and isoniazid (INH, Nydrazid, Laniazid). Methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall), a drug used to treat autoimmune disorders and cancers, has a variety of side effects including liver inflammation that can lead to cirrhosis. Disulfiram (Antabuse) is used to treat alcoholics and can cause liver inflammation.

However, the ketones are highly concentrated in the lab studies and dosages are extremely high in the rodent studies, so it’s impossible to equate these findings to the efficacy of ketones for actual human consumption. Before we can make a clear recommendation for using raspberry ketones for weight loss, we need a lot more research, specifically involving humans using ketones alone.


The key to this metabolism diet trick is to start slowly. First, add non-exercise movement to your day. However, environmental influences are probably significantly more important. The Tarahumara Indians of northwestern Mexico, for example, traditionally have low cholesterol levels; you could say “it’s in their genes.” But a study by scientists at Oregon Health Sciences University found that the Tarahumaras’ cholesterol levels rose sharply, and in just a few weeks, when they were directed by the researchers to switch from their traditional fiber-rich, plant-based diet to a Western-style diet full of cheese, butter, oils, egg yolks, white flour, soft drinks, and sugar.5

Thanks to my personal experience and Dr. Berkson, I know firsthand how important the liver is to health, metabolism and the ability to lose weight, create cellular energy, burn fat and detoxify the body. So when a doctor I know and respect, Alan Christianson, NMD, came out with a new book about the importance of the liver in metabolism, The Metabolism Reset Diet (Harmony, January 2019), I paid particular attention.
Interestingly, poly-BOHB has recently been reported to have important roles in mammalian mitochondrial membranes, cell membrane calcium channels, and in exotic functions like protein folding (Dedkova 2014). It exists in a variety of chain lengths, ranging from short to very long. It is not clear if humans can digest and use poly-BOHB consumed in the diet, but in animals, poly-BOHB appears to have probiotic and bowel protective functions. This is a rapidly evolving topic that we will be watching closely.
Consistent exercise needs to be part of any weight loss strategy. It needs to be maintained following weight loss to ensure that your body stabilizes while you make new and more metabolically fit fat cells over time (and your old unfit ones die off). Exercise turns on genes that enhance metabolic function that simply will not turn on if you aren't active. It is more important to be consistent than intense. No matter what your current level of fitness, find activities you can do consistently, and gradually increase your intensity. Sooner or later you will get to a level of fitness that tilts fat burning in your favor, not to mention improving liver and cardiovascular health.

Overweight and obese individuals are at risk for higher levels of cholesterol in their blood, which increases their risk for cardiovascular disease. For this reason, weight loss is often recommended to help lower cholesterol. While weight loss is an effective tool at lowering cholesterol, it may temporarily raise cholesterol, although this effect is not permanent.
In Christianson’s book, he suggests a program that is simplicity itself – two low-glycemic shakes and one “reasonable” meal per day – a program that he’s seen produce remarkable results when it comes to reversing metabolic damage. That’s because the shakes and meal are loaded with healthy fat, moderate protein and a relatively low amount of carbohydrates. This is the combo that Christianson (and he’s hardly alone on this one) believes is best to keep hormones balanced and metabolism running smoothly. (For the record, I am 100% on board with that combo!) And, because he is first and foremost a practitioner of functional medicine, his program involves a lot more than just food. It includes removing toxic liver stressors like alcohol, supplementing with nutrients that we don’t consume enough of (such as omega-3s, magnesium and vitamin D), paying back sleep debt and doing what he calls “micro workouts,” concentrated workouts that you can complete in less than five minutes.
I have been on your recommended diet for approximately 4 months. I started Wheat Belly Diet after my father (who jogs 6 km every day) suffered a heart attack at age 66 years. He is the last person I thought would have a heart attack, (being so fit and active and all). Anyhow after an immediate triple bypass he is back on track and has recently started to jog again. (We still have no idea why this had happened to him, after all he eats fairly well and his cholesterol results are within normal range).
There’s also the challenge of believing foods that seem innocent based on claims like “all-natural” and “healthy” on their packaging (think: cereal, tomato sauce, and dips) don’t contain added sugar, when in reality, there’s a good chance they do if they come in a wrapper or a box. The fact of the matter is you won’t know what you’re putting into your body for sure unless you look at the label.
Weight loss is ultimately about calories, but it’s so much more complicated than “eat less, move more,” and the metabolic changes that come along with losing weight are just one reason: it’s not just about eating less and moving more, because your body adjusts your metabolic rate depending on how much you eat and move. That introduces an unpredictable third factor into the calorie math, most notoriously in the form of “metabolic slowdown” caused by weight loss.

The liver is located in the upper right portion of the abdomen protected by the rib cage. It has two main lobes that are made up of tiny lobules. The liver cells have two different sources of blood supply. The hepatic artery supplies oxygen rich blood that is pumped from the heart, while the portal vein supplies nutrients from the intestine and the spleen.
“We could have found out that if we cut carbs, we’d lose way more fat because energy expenditure would go up and fat oxidation would go up,” said Kevin Hall, an obesity researcher at NIH and an author on many of these studies. “But the body is really good at adapting to the fuels coming in.” Another related takeaway: There appears to be no silver bullet diet for fat loss, at least not yet.
