Outside of Reddit, I have never seen what I would call a great write up on keto. Following one of these purchased plans, with lots of expensive supplements, is not only unnecessary but usually contains lots of bad advice. I can't even begin to imagine why you would be told that Granny Smith apples, which come in at around 12 net carbs per cup, are ok but brussel sprouts (~3.5g net carbs per cup) or carrots (11g net carbs per cup grated) are not. Doesn't even make sense. A spoon of peanut butter kick you out of keto? ~4-6g net carbs per 2T! The keto diet is not hard and it is very sustainable as a way of eating permanently. Part of America's problem with weight is that they think everything needs to be handed to them in a bottle or package, with no work or thinking involved. Keep your daily intake of net carbs very low (less than 30 is probably best) and get your carbs from healthy natural foods before you reach for prepackaged food. Moderate protein. Eating tons of fat is not a requirement. Keto is called high fat because in terms of percentages, you are getting the most calories from fat. If you eat moderate protein and very low carb, you need to get the rest of your calories from somewhere. I'm a 40 year old female and lost 100+ lbs eating keto with no purchased plan and no bs supplements. I still eat that way 4 years later. I have arthritis but I run, I lift weights, I ride horses, I ride bikes, I live a very healthy, active lifestyle since losing the weight and finding keto. Sleep is good – cpap makes sure of that 🙂 Health issues are arthritis, high LDL ( think that will go away once I loose lots of weight, family history though). I try to track nutrients and I know I need to do better but I am pretty sure I am getting enough fats and calories but the pen and paper will tell for sure. Was a cheerleader/gymnast, i also was a thrower on track & had always lifted weights, fastforward early 20s i became a long distance runner which i found to be theraputic. Day 6: When I thought back to what I ate today, I realized that between my salad and my lamb burger, I ate an entire avocado. Current weight — In order to lose weight, you need to be in a caloric deficit which means you need to burn more calories than you consume. That being said, your current weight is the number one determining factor for how fast you’ll be able to lose weight. This is because the heavier you are, the higher your metabolic rate is (your ability to burn calories in a given day). So, individuals with more weight to lose typically lose weight faster and more easily in the initial stages than those who don’t weigh as much.

Hi, I’m a 35 year old mother of twins toddlers. I have always been around 115 to 125 pounds. Right now I am at 135 pounds and I am desperately trying to loose between 15 to 20 pounds but I have been unable to do so. I exercise regularly. Weights as well as cardio abt 4 to 5 times a week. Available research on the ketogenic diet for weight loss is still limited. Most of the studies so far have had a small number of participants, were short-term (12 weeks or less), and did not include control groups. A ketogenic diet has been shown to provide short-term benefits in some people including weight loss and improvements in total cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure. However, these effects after one year when compared with the effects of conventional weight loss diets are not significantly different. [10]

Weight loss in obese or overweight individuals. Research shows that taking MCTs can decrease body weight, body fat, and waist and hip circumference by a small amount. A sizable amount of people who may be overweight or even obese may be classified as such even though they have a high amount of muscle. Conversely, people with a “healthy” or low BMI may have a high level of body fat and actually be at a greater risk for developing health problems. [5, 6]

One interesting finding of this eating plan is that it dispels the myth that people with or at risk for heart disease must eat a low fat diet. Although it does matter which types of fats are chosen, the percentage of calories from fat is less of an issue. The PREDIMED study, a primary prevention trial including thousands of people with diabetes or other risk factors for heart disease found that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil or nuts and without any fat and calorie restrictions reduced the rates of death from stroke by roughly 30%. [6] Most dietary fats were healthy fats, such as those from fatty fish, olive oil, and nuts, but total fat intake was generous at 39-42% of total daily calories, much higher than the 20-35% fat guideline as stated by the Institute of Medicine. [7]  Risk of type 2 diabetes was also reduced in the PREDIMED trial. [8]

Welcome to Keto! I cannot say enough good things about it! Your starting macros really depend on a few factors: current weight, height, approximate body fat, activity level, age, and gender. Its also important to figure out your BMR and daily calorie allotment. Each person is different; there is no way I could eat 150 grams of fat and get in a good amount of protein while remaining under my calorie limit for the day (1300). I just came across your blog on the keto diet. I have tried everything under the sun. I’m getting at a menopausal stage and no matter how healthy I eat, and exercise I continue to gain. Have you had good success with people like me? Do you really think this will work for me? I understand when women enter this stage it’s near impossible to lose weight. And for all my attempts it seems to be true. Lol!
The smoke point of EVOO is almost 400 degrees, which is much higher than other popular cooking oils like canola (200 degrees), or corn and non-virgin olive oils (around 320 degrees each). Julius thanks for the reply. I am usually asleep anywhere between 9-10pm. I usually eat dinner early between 5 and 6. Work out at about 7:30(after we put our daughter to sleep Mon, Wed, Fri). I drink caffeine in the mornings. I have a full gym in my garage where I do light weight until fatigue(or close to it) for 3 sets one after the other Bench, Squat, Barbell Rows, Military, and RDL with about a two and a half minute in between. When I am done I usually throw in some auxillaries.. curls, tri’s, etc.. I was thinking of adding HIIT on off days(sprints on treadmill, jump rope). Thank you again!

You can get abundant lauric acid by just eating a tablespoon or two of coconut oil; there is no benefit to refining it and buying it separately when it’s so common in plain coconut oil. If you use cheap lauric acid to cut the potency of true biological MCT oil, you’re making it so weak that you’re not going to feel the energy effects that come from the much more powerful C8 or C10 MCTs found in XCT or Brain Octane.
I can tackle coconut oil and avocado just fine. But there was one thing about the next two weeks that was looming over me: the intermittent fasting (IF) Dr. Axe built into his program.
