Oolong, a Chinese name for “black dragon,” is a light, floral tea that, like green tea, is also packed with catechins, which help to promote weight loss by boosting your body’s ability to metabolize lipids (fat). A study in the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine found that participants who regularly sipped oolong tea lost six pounds over the course of the six-week time period. That’s a pound a week!
Some green tea varieties are better for weight loss than others. If you’re all about that green and on a weight-loss mission, you might want to choose Matcha green tea—the richest green tea source of nutrients and antioxidants. Registered dietitian Isabel K Smith explains why: “The whole leaf is ground and consumed as part of the beverage, as opposed to other (most) types of green tea where the leaves are steeped and then the tea is consumed.”
I’m all for encouraging fruit and veggie consumption, but the calorie density approach doesn’t take into account how filling, delicious and healthful many high-calorie dense foods are. Nuts, seeds, olives and avocados — along with their butters and oils — all supply protective plant compounds that help lower the inflammatory process, thereby lowering your risk of disease. These same foods as part of a healthful eating pattern have also been linked with improvements in body weight and waist measurements, and they may make it easier to prevent weight gain, which is a huge step toward aging healthfully.
Nothing makes My Diet Coach so essential as the way it nags you into losing weight as frequently as necessary. As I’ve said before, this works for me. You can set all kinds of reminders and notifications, ranging from the presets—“Drink water”—to custom ones suited to your specific needs. “Stop grabbing Fritos from the snack drawer,” works particularly well for me, and I have that sucker set to go off every four hours. These notifications also get pushed to your Apple Watch.
After increasing water intake and replacing electrolytes, it should relieve most all symptoms of Keto Flu. For an average person that is starting a ketogenic diet, eating 20-30g of net carbs a day, the entire adaptation process will take about 4-5 days. My advice is to cut your carbs to fewer than 15g to ensure that you are well on your way into ketosis within one week. If you are experiencing any more keto flu symptoms, double check your electrolyte intake and adjust.
Variations on the Johns Hopkins protocol are common. The initiation can be performed using outpatient clinics rather than requiring a stay in hospital. Often, no initial fast is used (fasting increases the risk of acidosis, hypoglycaemia, and weight loss). Rather than increasing meal sizes over the three-day initiation, some institutions maintain meal size, but alter the ketogenic ratio from 2:1 to 4:1.

Your personal coach, however, isn’t necessarily a registered dietitian or certified psychologist. According to its website, areas of expertise include psychology, social work, nutrition, exercise physiology. People need to realize that in obesity treatment, just as in hypertension therapy, one drug won’t fit all, Aronne said. “In hypertension, there are more than 100 medications and more than 10 therapeutic categories,” he added. “That’s why treatment of hypertension is so effective. No one medication for hypertension works for every single person. That’s how we need to start looking at drugs for obesity.”

Over-prescribing is a common problem in modern medicine—and is not limited to diet pills (see: the opioid epidemic.) “It’s easier to prescribe a pill than talk about changing habits, so that’s what a lot of doctors do,” says Ari Levy, MD, founder and CEO of Shift, an integrative health and wellness practice in Chicago. (Levy himself does not prescribe weight-loss medications, focusing instead on nutrition and exercise.)

Obesity can affect systems throughout the entire body, increasing the risk of certain weight-related medical conditions. That’s why bariatric surgery is part of a multidisciplinary clinic, which means that your child doesn’t just work with bariatric surgeons — they also work with providers from several different medical specialties. A treatment team may include:
Keep up electrolytes. The major electrolytes in our bodies are sodium, potassium and magnesium. Because a low carb diet (especially a keto diet!) reduces the amount of water you store, this can flush out electrolytes and make you feel sick (called “keto flu”). This is temporary, but you can avoid or eliminate it by salting your food liberally, drinking broth (especially bone broth), and eating pickled vegetables. Some people also choose to take supplements for electrolytes, but it’s best to first consult a doctor that understands and supports keto/low carb lifestyles.
The ketogenic diet is calculated by a dietitian for each child. Age, weight, activity levels, culture, and food preferences all affect the meal plan. First, the energy requirements are set at 80–90% of the recommended daily amounts (RDA) for the child's age (the high-fat diet requires less energy to process than a typical high-carbohydrate diet). Highly active children or those with muscle spasticity require more food energy than this; immobile children require less. The ketogenic ratio of the diet compares the weight of fat to the combined weight of carbohydrate and protein. This is typically 4:1, but children who are younger than 18 months, older than 12 years, or who are obese may be started on a 3:1 ratio. Fat is energy-rich, with 9 kcal/g (38 kJ/g) compared to 4 kcal/g (17 kJ/g) for carbohydrate or protein, so portions on the ketogenic diet are smaller than normal. The quantity of fat in the diet can be calculated from the overall energy requirements and the chosen ketogenic ratio. Next, the protein levels are set to allow for growth and body maintenance, and are around 1 g protein for each kg of body weight. Lastly, the amount of carbohydrate is set according to what allowance is left while maintaining the chosen ratio. Any carbohydrate in medications or supplements must be subtracted from this allowance. The total daily amount of fat, protein, and carbohydrate is then evenly divided across the meals.
Dr. Arefa Cassoobhoy: 4 new weight loss drugs were approved recently, and more are sure to come. So, the question is, should you try one? The truth is weight loss drugs CAN help. You may want to try one if you’re obese, or if you’re overweight with a condition like type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. So, how much weight can they help you lose? About 10% of your excess weight. Now that may not seem like a lot, but it’s a realistic goal to start with. And, once you tackle that first 10% you can set a new goal. Just remember, these drugs won’t lose the weight for you. But they will give an added boost to your diet and exercise plan. If you think this is something you want to try, talk to your doctor. For WebMD I’m Dr. Arefa Cassoobhoy.
